Living in Brussels like a Brussels resident!

By Bed&Brussels
Juan 23 years old, Spanish Erasmus student, January 2019

“I spent a semester in Brussels in Erasmus. I had already had a first experience in Cluj, Romania, which went very well. I was looking forward to a new adventure abroad.

I discovered Brussels other than by its status as a European capital. It is a capital but with a village spirit. There is always something going on there: aperitifs, festivals, exhibitions, sports events,… And as we are many foreigners living in Brussels. It is easy to meet people through work, university, sport and not only with foreigners but also with locals.

Belgians like to eat and good beer…. He offers hundreds of different beers! I found a roommate thanks to the Bed & Brussels team. We were 4 roommates (1 French, 1 Turkish, 1 Portuguese and 1 myself) in a great apartment with a single bedroom, 2 bathrooms, 1 large common kitchen. My roommates have become lifelong friends. Living in a community in a city you don’t know makes it easier for you to integrate.

We were in the town of Schaerbeek, north of Brussels, with a view of the Josaphat Park.

Schaerbeek, a very multicultural municipality!

Located to the north of the city, Schaerbeek is a very cosmopolitan district, frequented by more than a hundred different nationalities.

Architecture is omnipresent in the streets. All you have to do is walk around and you will realize it.

There are many green spaces. The municipality is well served by public transport so you are quickly in the city centre, in the European district,…

Juan's advice

As with many places, you have to stroll through the streets, take your time. Walk with your nose in the air to discover the architectural wonders, especially on the side of rue Paul Deschanel, rue Louis Bertand, rue des Alizées. And stop on a terrace for a drink, a mint tea,…

Juan's good plans

Josaphat Park is a great place to relax, meet new people and meet new people. There are people all year round but especially when the weather is fine. You can play mini golf, there are Friday aperitifs and especially the Cherry Festival! I also really liked the Train Museum in the beautiful old train station of the town which shows the trains.
